The Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (PASGT) Helmet, introduced by the United States in 1983, was the first widely fielded Kevlar®-based combat helmet designed to replace the steel M1 Helmet. Developed by Gentex Corporation and adopted by the U.S. military, the PASGT set a new standard for lightweight ballistic protection, ergonomic design, and multi-environment survivability.
Nicknamed the “Fritz” or “Kevlar” helmet, the PASGT offered NIJ Level IIIA protection against 9mm FMJ, .45 ACP, and shell fragments from artillery, grenades, and mines — significantly reducing head injuries in combat zones from Grenada (1983) to Iraq (2003).
Its distinctive “tactical crown” shape — inspired by the WWII M1 but optimized for modern materials — provides superior coverage to the temples, sides, and neck, while the adjustable suspension system ensures a secure, comfortable fit across diverse head sizes.
Used by U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force personnel, the PASGT became a symbol of modern infantry protection and was exported to over 40 allied nations, including NATO members, Middle Eastern forces, and peacekeeping units.
Though officially phased out in favor of ACH/ECH models in the U.S., the PASGT remains in active service globally, valued for its proven reliability, low cost, and compatibility with legacy gear.
